The Antminer Z15 is a powerful mining machine that is designed to mine Zcash. It is a popular choice among cryptocurrency miners due to its high hash rate and energy efficiency. However, if you want to maximize the mining potential of your Antminer Z15, you can overclock it. Overclocking can increase the hash rate of your mining machine and therefore, increase your chances of earning more cryptocurrency. In this blog, we will discuss how to overclock Antminer Z15.

About Antminer Z15 Overclocking
We need to discuss money and labor first before anything else. We are here to help; we are not here to try to sell you something. Consider the time it will take a technician to properly tune the miner once it is out of your hands if you feel confident enough in the procedure to do it remotely. Depending on the model, it may be challenging to remove the manufacturer’s firmware, and doing so remotely may be impossible for some since the OC firmware must be loaded via SD card. As a result, in case you require a reboot, only remotely update the Antminer Z15 firmware during regular business hours. You must wait until the on-site technician can attend to the reboot service at Frontier, which is regarded as remote hands and is covered by your hosting contract. If not, your time and money could be wasted waiting for the technician to reboot the miner while the miner serves as a worker for the Antminer Z15 firmware programmer. Defer to your technician if you are uncomfortable overclocking. A skilled technician can load the firmware and properly tune the miner in about an hour.
The laborious process of tuning your miner can start once your Antminer Z15 firmware has been installed. The two most crucial factors to keep an eye on when overclocking your miners are ambient temperature and chip temperature. To hash properly and utilize ASIC chips to their full potential, they must be operated within a certain temperature range. Even worse than being too hot is being too cold. Most ASIC chips like to be on the warmer side between 70°-80°C. In order to properly adjust the Antminer Z15 frequency and fan speed if you’re overlocking your miner, you must keep an eye on the ambient temperature of the area in which it is housed.
Installing OC Firmware
- USE ONLY SOFTWARE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN. The only method I am aware of to infect a miner is by installing Antminer Z15 firmware, and the most likely method is to use dubious firmware. I use the term “virus” loosely because most malicious firmware simply steals your hashrate and hopes you won’t notice, which is why you should carefully read reviews.
- Hive OS is a reliable firmware that works well with a variety of miner models. We have used it successfully on several, and overall stability and performance have improved. On the Features page, you can find a list of all the models it supports. You can use this to underclock the S17 and T17 series of miners, but I must strongly advise you against doing so. For Z-series miners like the Z9 and Z11, Efudds Fuddware is a reliable example of another OC firmware. 3% of your hashrate will be used to pay for this firmware, but there are some reliable alternatives with fewer features.
- Due to the signature protection that Bitmain has implemented, this will typically require an SD card. Pro tip: Bitmain’s older firmware releases and SD card test firmware will disable this protection on some devices. If so, it might be necessary to repeat the process twice.
- Format an SD card with fat32 to use it as a storage drive. Simply copy and paste the OC Firmware to the root directory of the SD card from the zip file. (It is not necessary to make the image into a bootable drive.)
- While the miner is off, insert the SD card. The miner will start to that drive automatically when you turn it on.
- Watch the lights as the miner is powered up. They typically flash or remain solid, but they can all differ. The status lights should change, which is a sign that the firmware has been loaded. For instance, when the power is turned on, both lights flash for 20 seconds before going solid. I typically count to 10 after noticing this change before unplugging the miner to make sure it’s finished.
- Wait until all the fans, including the PSU fan, stop spinning before unplugging the miner. We want to let the miner use all of its power.
- Your OC firmware ought to now be installed after a miner reboot.
- Read any README files you find in the firmware download before installing since this is meant to be a guide.
Tuning Your Miner
- First check the ambient temperature of the hosting location for the next 7–10 days. At our Colorado facility, we occasionally experience extreme temperature swings of 40 to 50 degrees outside. While we take all reasonable precautions to protect the equipment, if the client is overclocking the miner on a day when the temperature is between 85 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit, they are asking for trouble. We have a service called Frontier Premiere for those clients that don’t want to worry about their miners or check the weather weekly. On those hot days, we protect the miners by putting them in a Low Power Mode for the client. Please get in touch with us if you’re interested in this service so we can give you more information.
- the Antminer Z15 firmware has been installed. If it’s cool outside—below 60F/15C—configure your miner and set the manual fan speed to 75%. If the temperature is over 80°F/27°C on a summer day, you might want to set the speed to 90–95%, but keep in mind that you’ll need to reduce it when it gets cold. You should give yourself some leeway as you adjust the frequency of the boards because the fan speed will have the biggest impact on the chip temperature.
- If your miner’s global frequency is set to 500 by default, start increasing it to 550 and run the miner for 10 minutes. Until you reach the desired hashrate, you can keep increasing the frequency by 6–12 Mhz steps if you are not experiencing any temperature problems.
- Stability is the name of the game. A higher frequency does not always translate into a higher hashrate because the hashboards cooperate. If you increase the frequency and observe a decrease in hashrate, the lower frequency might be the best hashrate for that board. You may need to lower the frequency if you observe a high number of hardware errors or an unstable hashrate.
- Pay attention to the board with the highest chip temperature. If you’re not comfortable or don’t want to spend the extra time, just concentrate on the global frequency. Some OC firmware will give you the option to tune the frequency per board. The temperatures should be kept a few degrees lower if you’re going to tune the miner per board.
- Temperatures will rise as the frequency is raised. I’ll list the typical operating temperatures below, but most ASIC chips prefer to be somewhat warm. It’s best to hash between 75 and 80 degrees Celsius, but out of concern for safety, I usually stay on the cooler side of that range. Although they will actually hash better the warmer you keep them, this will affect how long the thermal paste or grease will last between the chip and the heat sink. (If you own a miner from the Z-Series, your thermal grease should be changed at least every two years.)
- You can increase the manual fan speed to 100% for the warmer months once you’ve dialed in the frequency and are able to keep all the boards below 80–83C. Yes, doing so will reduce the temperature below the goal you’ve set, but it will also give the Antminer Z15 some breathing room on particularly hot days.
- You can keep using the hottest board as a control if you have the option to adjust the frequency for each board. Continue increasing the frequency on the other two boards by the smallest increment (likely 6Mhz) while leaving your global frequency and the busiest board alone. The hashrate will rise, and all three boards’ temperatures will do likewise. If you see the temps rise or the hashrate is unstable then you may need to back off of the OC
- Since hashboards communicate with one another, changing one board’s frequency may have an impact on the others. Any piece of machinery that depends on frequency to function can be an odd, capricious creature. There are many outside variables to take into consideration, such as voltage and interference, both of which can impact. Even though this is science, overclocking the Antminer Z15 correctly requires a certain amount of artistic finesse.
